Have you ever had an amasing night out with your friends, partying till the wee hours and thought for example ‘what is the night life like in Tokyo?’ Well now you can find out! The accessibility of blogging has allowed us to expand our knowledge of the world and to participate in the Global Village. With blogging sites such as WordPress, Blogspot and Twitter to name a few, you can dip in and out of the lives of others with ease. Something which professionals and even commercial sites such as ASOS and Glasses Direct have picked up on. Journalists write about bloggers and bloggers write about their world, no more so that Ryo Nakagawa’s blog Tokyo Party Night.
Ryo is a commerical photographer living and working in Tokyo Japan, his images are explosions of colour and energy, a style which undoubtably he developed during his commissions for clients such as Dior Homme and Armani. His aim is to document the ‘real’ Tokyo and to reflect it inwards so that his peers can find enjoyment within their own culture, something he muses isn’t something which comes naturally to the Japanese. His candid visual blog of nights out and social scenes has gained a reaction from publications such as Peaches Geldof’s magazine Disappear Here as his blogging style follows the trend of blogs such as ‘I love glam’, another exploration of Japanese social lifestyle (http://iloveglam.wordpress.com). This emerging culture of magazines looking at blogs for information and inspiration has spread across the board, both Elle magazine UK and Harper’s Bazaar Singapore both reported on blogging in their April issue. Sites such as Fashionatiom.wordpress.com and even blogger Tavi’s site (http://tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com/) who yours truely reported on in April have been featured in the magazines and it looks like the love of blogs is here to stay, even designers such as Marc Jacobs have become part of the blogging phenomenon. So what are you waiting for? Join youtube or wordpress and get blogging or even vlogging, the world wants to know about you!

As a creator of image whether it be photography, art or illustration it can be hard to keep track of your work when it is in digital format, therefore it is important to be aware of the creative commons license which is your protection against image stealers. It was launched in 2006 after a landmark case against photography images being published without the owners permission. Since then this non-profit organisation has expanded its definition and licenses. Each ‘creator’ of image has the right to publish the all rights reserved creative commons license on their site which is also the case for Fruit Magazine. We would never use an image without permission, each image on the site is either owned by us or is being used by the owners permission. More information on the creative commons license can be found at http://creativecommons.org/.
Another issue that we creatives face is a massive backlog of images, whether we have jpgs clogging up our hard drives or stacks of CD’s filled with our work, keeping on top of and tracking work can be very difficult. Which is why I recommend Picasa by Google and Photoshop Express by Adobe. Each site offers a easy to use way of uploading and cataloging work. With Google’s Picasa you can download a application which allows to edit the images on your desktop before uploading them to your web album. These albums can be made public or private allowing you to email albums and slideshows for others to see. You can also upload on the go from mobile devices, GPS track the locations of your images (particularly useful if your are a wildlife, landscape or press photographer) and tag people in your photos. The images can be easily edited with Picasa 3 desktop, cropping and red eye are some of the features including advanced adjustment tools such as white balance. Picasa online offers 1GB of storage (which can be expanded for a price), however if you are looking for something a little more advance that will let you seamlessly edit your images remotely then Photoshop Express is for you. Uploading high res images is a breeze depending on your internet connection as your Express account has 2GB, but you can also import images from Flickr, Picasa and Photobucket accounts. Once uploaded the images can be assorted into albums and categories allowing you to decorate and customise your images or edit them online. Tools such as touch up and exposure are a step up from Picasa’s red eye, you can even use filters such as sketch and distort. Express also has a more professional composition nothing less than you would expect Adobe to offer, however it doesnt have the versatility of Picasa, because the site’s platform is Google you can smoothly link your email, YouTube Blogger and Picasa accounts together and uploading on go from your mobile is another plus. Either way each site will allow to digitally catalog your work online for free and thats always a good thing.

This morning via my news updates I came across an interesting site that I have never seen before. The site Funny or Die features blog like videos shot by celebrities; I was directed to the site via an article discussing a recent vlog by Lindsay Lohan. I then clicked on a link and was sent to a vlog by Natalie Portman and Rashida Jones click on the link below to see the video, I mean you must admit they have a point…

Sometimes we come across something special here at fruit and we urgently have to let the world know. Last night as I was doing my regular browsing of lookbook.nu (its a great way to get style ideas) I came across something quiet astonishing, a 12 year old über style blogger called Tavi. Dressed in nu-rave meets coco chic she writes about her inspirations behind her style but also fiercely promotes her t-shirt brand which created under a collaboration with American brand ‘Borders&Frontiers’ is to raise money to help Darfur victims. The little girl has a comprehensive blog in which she refers to herself as ‘granny’ and ‘12-year old with the posture of a crotchety old hag’ has alot to say, she also goes onto say ‘…granny needs some non-caffeinated peppermint tea and a pack of mini muffins (Fat free, please, doc says it’s bad for my diet)’. Now, I understand that we live in a world where youth is fragile, advertising and media encourages children to look beyond their years and to grow up, but I as much as I admire Tavi and her astonishing articulation skills a part of me just wants the kid to put down the vintage pumps and go outside and play! She definatly shouldn’t be worrying about her calorie intake when she is a svelte as she is. But hey hey, thats the traditionalist within me.
If you want to delve into Tavi’s world then you can visit her blog ‘Style Rookie’ at http://tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com/. And remember whatever you decide about youngster she is still headlining an amasing cause (for her Bat Mitzvah don’t you know) Darfur is a volatile place and its victims are very real so she at the very least deserves kudos for highlighting their plight.
